We’re Not Saying Anyone’s to Blame, But Something Has Gone Wrong

We want to be clear at the outset that this is not about blame. Assigning fault rarely leads to productive outcomes, and focusing on individual responsibility can distract from the broader issue unfolding before us.

That said, it would be irresponsible to ignore the growing sense that something has gone wrong.

Acknowledging the Moment

This is one of those moments that resists simple explanation. There is no single decision, event, or actor that neatly accounts for the current situation, which makes it tempting to conclude that nothing meaningful has occurred.

We do not share that conclusion.

When Outcomes Don’t Match Intentions

Much of what we are experiencing appears to be the result of well-intentioned actions producing results no one explicitly asked for. These outcomes were not necessarily unpredictable, but they were easy to dismiss at the time.

Now, they are harder to ignore.

The Comfort of Ambiguity

Ambiguity offers comfort because it allows everyone to remain technically correct while nothing improves. When responsibility is diffused broadly enough, accountability becomes abstract rather than actionable.

This dynamic may be understandable, but it is not sustainable.

Patterns, Not Incidents

What concerns us most is not any single issue, but the repetition of familiar patterns. Each situation is treated as unique, exceptional, and unrelated to the last, even as the results begin to look increasingly similar.

At a certain point, coincidence becomes an insufficient explanation.

Avoiding the Blame Game

To be clear, pointing out that something has gone wrong is not the same as accusing anyone of wrongdoing. It is possible for systems to fail quietly, without malice or intent.

That does not make the failure less real.

Shared Discomfort

Conversations across the community suggest a shared discomfort that people struggle to articulate. There is agreement that something feels off, paired with hesitation about naming it too directly.

This hesitation is understandable. It is also part of the problem.

What We’re Not Saying

We are not proposing immediate solutions, structural overhauls, or sweeping declarations. Those conversations require time, care, and far more specificity than an editorial can provide.

What we are saying is simpler than that.

Acknowledgment Is a Start

Before progress can occur, there must be a willingness to acknowledge that the current trajectory is not producing the outcomes people were promised or expected. Ignoring that reality does not preserve stability; it merely delays adjustment.

Recognizing that something has gone wrong is not an accusation. It is an invitation to stop pretending otherwise.
